Fort Good Hope at a Glance
Traditionally known as Radili Ko, which means "rapids", the hamlet of
Fort Good Hope was established in 1805, making it the oldest settlement in the
Lower Mackenzie Valley. Located along the eastern edge of the massive Mackenzie
River 145 km (90 mi) northwest of Norman
Wells, many residents rely on traditional methods of trapping, hunting and
fishing to earn a living. Those interested in making the journey to this area
of Canada's far northern
regions will be dazzled by the northern lights and impressed by the rugged scenery.
Hire a local guide for a trip down the Mackenzie River rapids and see the towering
limestone cliff formations known as The
Ramparts, and experience the village's deep history at Our
Lady of Good Hope National Historic Site. This tiny church was built by
a missionary priest in the middle of the 19th century and is known for the colourful
frescos painted throughout its interior. In the summertime, the Wood
Block Music Festival unites locals and visitors with an outdoor celebration
of traditional music.
